Are you treating electrical safety testing like a checkbox—or a safeguard?

Healthcare facilities—including hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, clinics, and veterinary offices—are required by federal and state regulations to perform annual electrical safety testing on all plug-in medical equipment. These quick, essential tests ensure that devices meet strict safety standards set by the FDA and Cal/OSHA, minimizing the risk of electrical, mechanical, or thermal failure that could harm patients or staff. Some insurance providers also mandate this testing as part of coverage compliance.

Because testing for medical equipment is more rigorous than for generic electronics, passing devices are certified with a dated inspection sticker. Compliance is critical; random audits are conducted, and violations can lead to fines ranging from $1,000 to $50,000 per piece of equipment.

Don’t risk operational disruption—ensure your facility is always inspection-ready.

Electrical safety testing for medical equipment includes:

This measures the leakage current between an exposed part of the equipment and true earth. This test applies to both Class I and Class II equipment and should be performed with both normal and reversed mains polarity.

This checks that the equipment still meets the manufacturer’s specifications and hasn’t been damaged or contaminated. This includes checking the housing enclosure for damage or cracks.

Additional tests measure insulation resistance, earth ground resistance, touch current and other variables of the medical equipment electrical system. Other basic safety tests include measuring the resistance of the ground wire and measuring the isolation of the chassis and patient lead/contact.

If it has an electrical plug, we can test it!
